Dear Critter Corner: This is our first Spring and Summer with our pup, and we are looking forward to many outings. What are some things we should be aware of or pack for an outing?
This is a great time to get out and bring your pup with you when you are able and if they are okay with it. Not all dogs love to be at the downtown festivals that happen this time of year. Look at your pup and see if they enjoy those types of outings, or if they would prefer a nice quiet hike on a trail. Whichever is right for your pup, there are a few items to keep in mind when taking your pup with you.
After you have chosen the right venue for your pup, you will want to have a few supplies with you to ensure all have fun. A must for the warm weather is a supply of water for your pup – a collapsible bowl and a water bottle work great. Offer your pup water if they are panting and after any activities. If you will be in one spot for a while, it is nice to have the bowl filled for them to access when they want.
A mat or bed can be a nice addition to activities where you will be hanging out for some time. This will give your pup a comfy place to relax. If you haven’t already done so, you can teach them to go to their place. This is always a handy cue to have.
If you are taking your pup for hikes or just any trail around the Bay Area, keep a look out for foxtails. It’s a good idea to brush your dog right after a hike to make sure there are no hidden foxtails in their coats. This is also a great time to check for ticks that may have gotten onto your dog during the hike. Having your pup on a flea or tick preventative can be a big help.
Lastly, have fun and enjoy the time with your pup!
