Burrowing Owl Nursery

In 2019, through a partnership with the Santa Clara Valley Habitat Agency, permitted through both Federal and State wildlife regulation agencies, Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA opened its first on-site Burrowing Owl Nursery to “head-start” baby owls so they could grow into healthy and strong adults.  Once mature, the owls will be released to the wild where they can breed and help increase the number of local Burrowing Owl populations. We constructed a secure, outdoor aviary on the rooftop of our Center for Compassion in Burlingame for the owls. The first group of owls have thrived under our care and will be returned to the wild in spring 2020.

Based on the success of our first group of Burrowing Owls, we will be continuing the program and receiving another batch of owlets very soon.

Our Burrowing Owl nursery is funded entirely by donations and if you want to be a part of helping this species please visit www.PHS-SPCA.org/donate or contact Lisa Van Buskirk at 650-340-7022 ext. 327 or LVanbuskirk@PHS-SPCA.org.
