This female Hooded Merganser was found by a Good Samaritan with large wounds on her neck and pelvic region. Our Wildlife Center staff have stabilized her and cleaned up her wounds. She will continue to receive top notch care until she’s able to be returned to the wild. Hooded Mergansers migrate to the San Francisco Bay Area around wintertime. The females of this species have a reddish crest that sticks out from the back of her head in multiple directions making it look like she’s perpetually having a bad hair day.
