Dear Miss Behavin’:

After searching for months, we’ve finally found the perfect dog for us and we’re bringing him home this weekend. Any tips for our first week with Petey?

Bringing home a new pet always comes with an adjustment period for everybody, but there are some ways that you can make it a smoother transition.

A major thing to consider is safety. Petey will be unfamiliar with his new surroundings, and if he gets loose, he likely won’t know how to get back to his new home. Bringing him home wearing a secure harness and leash can help prevent him from running off. When you arrive at your home, be sure to hold onto his leash before getting out of the car to make sure he doesn’t slip out the door. Once you’re both out, give Petey the chance to do his business before bringing him into your already dog-proofed house.

Petey may have been potty trained in his foster home or at the shelter, but it’s fair to expect a few accidents in the beginning as he learns the rules of his new house. Treat him like a puppy in this area, setting a firm routing for feeding, potty breaks and walks. Offering stability through a daily routine will also help Petey settle in and feel more comfortable during his transition.

Part of establishing a routine will involve keeping things a bit boring for the first week or so. Resist the temptation to invite your friends and family over to meet your new addition right away and keep things calm and quiet at home. Take this time to bond with each other by going for lots of walks, playing, and just hanging out at home. Allowing Petey this time to decompress and build a relationship with you will help make introductions to all your family and friends less stressful.

The most important thing to remember is that it takes time to become a perfect family pet. Do your best to set your expectations aside and let Petey adjust at his own pace. There will be bumps in the road, so don’t hesitate to ask for help. A Paw-Fect Start behavior consultation with a trainer at Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA could be just what you need to help you and Petey get on the same page.
