Dear Miss Behavin’:
I’ve never had a cat before but would like to adopt one from a shelter as a companion animal. Where do I start?

That’s great that you’re interested in adopting from a shelter. Many rescues and shelters have a wide variety of cats, ranging in ages, breeds, sizes, colors, coat lengths, and temperaments. It’s a good idea to take a few trips to your local animal rescue or shelter, and meet with different cats to determine what exactly you’re looking for. The adoption staff at each organization may be able to assist you in determining your current lifestyle, home life environment, and what types of cats they have available that would be a good fit or match for you and those living in your home.

Since you’ve never had a cat before, sometimes adopting a slightly older cat with a softer personality can be an easier transition than a young kitten. Older cats are usually well adjusted and have already defined their personality, so what you see is what you’re getting. However, young kittens or cats can be fun in experiencing their high energy and playful attitude, as well as, going through their different life and growth stages.

Try to be as prepared as you can before bringing the cat into your home. Once you’ve settled on an age range, personality, and any other requirements, be sure to bring everyone in your household to meet the potential cat. That way you can see how the cat does with them and how they do with the cat, it’s pretty important that everyone gets along to ensure a happy home.
Before bringing the cat home, try to read up a little on the following topics: feeding and basic nutrition, litterbox training, safe handling techniques, toys for mental stimulation, and transporting. If you can, setup your new cat’s living area with their bed, food/water bowls, toys, and litter box beforehand. That way you can easily adjust the cat to its new forever home.
