I’m heading out on a last minute trip this weekend and bringing my dog Willy. We’re staying at our friend’s cabin. I’ve already set aside the essentials like food and his leash, but what else should I pack for him?

Hooray for a dog friendly vacation! There are a few things you might not think of that could come in handy when traveling with your dog.

Set aside things you use on a daily basis – food, poop bags, toys, bedding, treats, medications, collar and or harness and leash, and a bowl. Additionally, a collapsible bowl or small dish will be useful if you plan on hiking or taking your dog on an adventure. It might also be a good idea to bring some extra kibble in case your trip is extended or your dog is particularly active (swimming, running, etc.).

If you want to be prepared, bring a few towels and rags, a blanket or two, and a dog first aid kit. If your dog spends time on the couch or ends up sleeping with you, you can cover those surfaces with a blanket to protect them from dog hair, dirt, or scratches. If Willy is prone to marking or having accidents in new places, it wouldn’t hurt to bring your cleaning supplies just in case. If the area where you’re staying isn’t fenced in, a long line or tether might be useful as well.

You’ll also want to make sure Willy’s ID tag is up to date and legible. If you have time, add a tag that has the address of where you’ll be staying and an extra phone number or two in case you don’t have cell service. Dogs might wander off and get lost in an unfamiliar place and not know their way back.

Lastly, familiarize yourself with the closest veterinary hospital in case of an emergency. Your dog first aid kit might be useful for a broken nail or scrape, but any serious injuries will require a visit to the doctor. Enjoy your trip with Willy and if you realize you forgot something, make a note for next time.
