Dear Critter Corner:

We just got a new puppy and want to start working on getting them to come to us when called.  Can you give us some pointers?

This is the perfect time to start training since when our pups are very young, they tend to follow us everywhere.  Take advantage of this and as you walk away from the pup or find them in another room, say their name and the cue ‘come’ and then encourage them until they get to you.  Once there, praise and follow with a little treat.

There are a couple of important rules to keep in mind when teaching the recall.  Coming to you must always be positive in the eyes of your pup, only say it when you are sure it will happen and if you say it make it happen.

In addition to these rules, you will want to look at when you are asking them to come to you.  Don’t let it only be to end the fun.  Instead have them come to you often, tell them how good they are and then send them to go have more fun!  Repeat this several times so they never know when the fun will end.

Another great way to practice is with the use of a long line.  This can allow your pup to adventure in places you may not be ready for them to be off leash and have the security of the long line as your safety net.

Reinforce and praise whenever they check in on their own.  This can be on walks, in the yard or while they are playing with friends.  The more the behavior is paid attention to the more likely it will repeat and this is the foundation for a recall.

Find fun games to play such as having them chase you, playing hide and seek or teaching the game of touch.  Be sure to let them know how smart they are!

If you are still having problems or would like some extra help, you can schedule a 1:1 Consultation with one of our behaviorists or call our Behavior Helpline at ext. 183.
