Dear Critter Corner: When I’m home with my 2-year-old cat she follows me everywhere I go — into the bathroom, the kitchen, even the closet. If I’m leaving home, she tugs at my pants, blocks the door, and then paws at the door once I’ve left. Do you know why she’s so attached to me?
It sounds like your cat might have some level of separation anxiety. This could be due to a variety of reasons, whether she has anxiety in general, does not have enough outlets to help her to self soothe, has gone through a recent change such as a move, or possibly has a medical condition.
A few ways to help increase your cat’s security and independence can start with providing her with a daily routine that she can rely on. This will help give her the security of knowing when her favorite activities are happening, such as breakfast/dinner, play time, snacks, grooming, cuddle/pet sessions, etc. If you’re able to keep her on a routine she won’t have to guess when these activities will next occur, and this alone can provide her with a sense of security, lessening her anxiety.
Play sessions and socializing, whether through sitting reading a book, grooming your cat, or petting are important to also help bond with her during designated times. The play sessions will provide her with daily exercise to keep her from becoming bored or depressed. A good idea is to play with her before you leave for work, when you get home, and prior to bedtime.
When leaving and entering your home, try to keep the departure or arrival calm and low key. If needed, leave your home for a few minutes at a time and then return, and continue doing so to build up your cat’s tolerance for your departure. You may want to leave the TV on or soft music playing as a quiet distraction while you’re away. Some cats enjoy treats or kibble left around the house as a treasure hunt they can engage in until your return.
As you continue to troubleshoot her anxiety, be sure that your cat is seen regularly by a vet to rule out any potential medical conditions that could be causing them pain, stress, or anxiety.
