Dear Critter Corner: My cat Oli has been going in and out of the litter box for the past few days, sometimes using it and sometimes not. He’s also had a few accidents around the house. Could he have a urinary tract infection?
From what you’re describing, it sounds like Oli might have a urinary tract or bladder infection. For starters, it would be a good idea to take him to the vet and rule out any infections. The vet may determine that the infection can be cleared up easily with antibiotics. However, the vet may also let you know that Oli will need something more permanent, like ongoing medication or a diet change to lessen the chances of recurring infections. Be sure to follow your vet’s guidelines in helping to treat your cat.
If your cat does have an infection, he may also be associating the pain from the infection with his litter box. This may be causing him to feel stressed when using the litter box and causing him to go in and out without using it. Most cats are pretty quick about their litter box if they are not in pain, don’t associate it with pain, and find it comfortable and inviting. This can translate to a pretty consistent use of the litter box: going in, sniffing around, circling a few times, eliminating, covering if they prefer, and then exiting the box.
While your cat is recovering, keep offering the same litter box and add a few others to your household in quiet locations. Some cats prefer litter boxes without a cover, as this gives them a 360-degree view of their surroundings, in case they need to jump out quickly. Other cats prefer low-sided or high-sided boxes and may even have preferences about litter depth. Some cats prefer a very shallow amount of litter, while others that like to dig may prefer one to two inches or more of litter. With the addition of a few other litter boxes you can help determine what your cat prefers and is most comfortable with, especially when he’s not feeling well. This may help remove the association of discomfort from the litter box as well as reduce accidents. Be sure to also use an enzyme-based cleaning solution to help clean up a soiled area.
