Dear Miss Behavin’: I’ve had my cat JJ for about six years and he’s always been pretty perfect! Lately, he stopped using the litter box and now seems to enjoy using the dining room floor. What is the deal and how can we correct this?

There are various reasons that a cat may stop using the litter box and often, it’s one of the first signs they give us that something, from their perspective, is wrong. If your cat suddenly stops using the litter box, a good place to start is with a vet visit. Your cat’s veterinarian will help determine if he is experiencing any pain or discomfort, which could attribute to his change in bathroom habits.

If given a clean bill of health, look  at the litter box itself. How often is it being cleaned? Most cats prefer their litter boxes to be cleaned at least once per day. Think of their box like a port-a-potty for people. We don’t want to go inside when it hasn’t been cleaned out for a while, and your cat may feel similarly about his own litter box. Keep it as clean as possible, scooping waste at least once per day and changing the litter entirely at least once per week.

If the box is being kept plenty clean, look to JJ’s environment for clues. Has anything at home changed recently? Cats are sensitive to change and may feel disrupted by a new work schedule, new baby, or even rearranged furniture. Be patient as he adjusts, and make it easier on him by keeping his litter box extra clean, adding a second litter box, and making sure he has access to somewhere he feels comfortable and safe.
