Dear Miss Behavin’:

My dog, Rocket, used to love going for walks, but recently got spooked by a noisy garbage truck and now seems on edge every time we go out. How do we tire him out without stressing him out?

The last part of your question is key— avoid stressing him out! After a traumatic event, such as the garbage truck incident, it can take a few days for your dog’s stress to dissipate. While Rocket decompresses, try taking him for walks at off hours, like early in the morning and late at night when there isn’t much traffic. You can also load Rocket into the car and drive to a quieter neighborhood or trail where you can walk without incident.

If he is still nervous outside, there are ways you can provide stimulation and activity inside your home or in the backyard. If Rocket loves to play, engage him in a a rigorous game of fetch in the yard or tug-of-war inside to tire him out. If he has doggie friends, invite them over for a playdate.

If he’s more of a solitary dog, shoot for mental stimulation. A great way to keep a dog from getting bored is to exercise his brain. Find the time for a few 5-10 minute training sessions throughout the day to keep Rocket from getting antsy. Teach him a new trick, work on basic obedience, or even play a game. Put Rocket in a sit-stay while you hide treats in another room. Then tell him to “find it!” and watch him use his incredible sense of smell to uncover the loot.

After some time, he should be ready to hit the pavement again. Be prepared to keep walks short in the beginning, and keep them fun by bringing yummy treats or a favorite toy along. On the next rainy day, remember that a workout for the brain can be just as valuable as physical exercise.
