Dear Critter Corner: My family is going on a four-day trip, and we’re planning on bringing our cat Henry in the car with us. He’s very adventurous and social at home and in our yard. Is there anything we should do to prepare for the trip?

That’s great that Henry is adventurous and not timid or shy. You’ll want to bring all of his supplies that he needs on a daily basis: food, water, bowls, treats, toys, beds, blankets, litterbox and litter, medications (if any), along with his cat crate. It might also be helpful to bring some cleaning supplies in case he feels sick on the car drive or has any potty accidents during the trip. Be sure to bring extra food and water (medications if any) in case your trip back gets delayed. Pack all of these supplies in a bag just for your cat; that way it’s easier to keep track of and find your cat’s items when you need them.

To make the car ride easier for him, start with training him to go into his crate with treats or his food. Try to help him associate the crate with yummy rewards and as a safe place for him to relax during the car ride as well as during your stay.

If he’s adventurous, you may want to see if he likes walking on a harness. Be sure to have him fitted for a harness designed for cats and have him learn how to walk in it at home first. Give him plenty of praise and treats for taking his first few steps. If he enjoys walking in the harness, ensure that the harness is secure, then try walking him outside in your yard. Slowly build him up to walking in front of your house and possibly down the street. The more comfortable he is, the more likely you’ll be able to walk him in the harness when exploring on your trip. Be mindful that he’s comfortable, calm, and curious, and not overstimulated or overwhelmed. Having his crate available will come in handy in case he wants to take a break.

At your destination, set up his belongings in your bedroom or a guest room. After a few days, if you feel that he’s eating, drinking, and using his litterbox appropriately, then let him explore the rest of your lodgings. Just be mindful of where he is the most comfortable and the least stressed.
