Dear Miss Behavin’: I really want to get a bird, specifically a budgie. I have done a little research but I’m not sure if I’m ready for a pet bird. What do budgies need to feel comfortable?

Birds can be great pets and companions, but they do require a lot of care. Budgies can live around 8 – 15 years but have been known to live longer. They need interactive play a few hours a day outside of their cage. Their cage should be the largest cage you can afford, with the minimum dimensions being 30” x 30” x 30”. Your budgie should be able to freely spread its wings and turn around. Toys and perches need to be rotated for mental stimulation. Budgies also require unfiltered sunlight (direct sunlight, not through glass). Tray liners will need to be replaced every day and the cage will need to be disinfected once a month. They have a varied diet that includes pellets, seeds, veggies, and fruits. Find a qualified avian vet in your area as they should be seen by one once a year. Budgies have sensitive respiratory systems as well, so they should not be exposed to cigarette smoke, harsh cleaners, or aerosols. Like with any pet, do your research and make sure you are prepared to accommodate their needs financially. Good luck in your avian journey!
